Sangju Dried Persimmon Export Boom: Implementation of HiddenTag to Protect Sangju Gotgam Brand
Gyeongbuk Sangju, Korea’s biggest producer of dried persimmon (Gotgam in Korean) has been actively exporting its dried persimmon to the world.
Since the export began in 2014, the volume of dried persimmons has gradually increased, and by 2017, the export volume of the fruit has been estimated around 39 tons and worth 800 million won.
Sangju dried persimmon is considered as the best in the country due to optimal geographical conditions of the area, which are favorable for the growth of persimmon trees and the production of the dried fruit. The city of Sangju has developed the brand “Sangju Gotgam” through various promotional events overseas.
In order to expand its export to North American market, the city has opened and operated nine stores since 2017 (5 in USA and 4 in Canada), and in the case of the Vietnamese market, the city is promoting dried persimmon through its 31 Sangju agricultural products promotion centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.
In the future, dried persimmon export will continue not only in the US and Vietnam but also in Taiwan, Myanmar, Singapore and Hong Kong.
